The Merry Month of May-National Masturbation Month

The Merry Month of May-National Masturbation Month

May DayMay, so many lovely words that go along with May–maidens, merriment, masturbation. You see, May is National Masturbation Month, a day of celebration and recognition started by Good Vibrations (with a nod to Dr. Jocelyn Elders)–the sex toy shop that started in San Francisco.

We celebrate May as that month of lush tender green growth and lovely flowers–it’s our awakening after a long cold, bleak winter. We dress up and dance around the May pole. A ritual we performed at my boarding school every year. Young maidens, white dresses, purity and that phallic symbol we danced and weaved around. Worshipping? We didn’t really know what we were doing.

In this video, from the movie Camelot, women knew the connotations of the Lusty Month of May. They celebrated with abandon, acknowledging passion and desire.

We didn’t talk about it in my teen years. After all, good girls didn’t do that kind of thing. Adults weren’t teaching us about sex much less acknowledging that as young women we might feel desire. Forty years later we’re still hung up about masturbation.

I admit to not liking the word myself. It sounds so… ick. I like to use the term self-pleasuring. That’s what we’re doing. When we masturbate we are responding to our own sexual desire. We are giving ourselves sexual pleasure. Our bodies are designed for pleasure, otherwise we wouldn’t have an organ, like the clitoris, that exists for no other reason than to provide a pleasurable sensation when it touched. It has no other essential function.

We have urges and we accept the necessity of taking care of our body’s needs. We feed our bodies, we tend to our wounds, we wash and care for our bodies. All natural, ‘acceptable’ routines.

Shouldn’t we be self-pleasuring as well?

I’ll be sharing more on why and how to incorporate a self-pleasuring practice into your life throughout the month of May.

[…] If you’re a woman over 50, chances are that you were conditioned as a child to believe that masturbation was wrong and just for men. Hopefully, you know, love and appreciate the sexual you are. But for those who need a little encouragement and reinforcement to let go of your hang ups about masturbation, I recommend giving Walker Thornton’s article in Better After 50, It’s National Masturbation Month – Are You Ready to Celebrate?, a read. She also shares more thoughts on and information about masturbation on her personal blog. […]
