Women and orgasms is one of those topics that doesn’t get the serious attention it deserves. We shy away from talking about the subject, leaving women, particularly younger women, to wonder how to define ‘normal’. And, if we’re turning to the media to inform our understanding of what constitutes a healthy female sexual response, well… heavens help us. Very few women have those quick, spontaneous, over-the-top orgasms we see on movies. Some untold percentage of women have no orgasms or have extreme difficulty achieving an orgasm. And, many of their partners are clueless at how to help or even to know what to expect. That stretches across all age spans, unfortunately.
So what to think and how to figure out what is normal? I was doing some research for a prospective writing job and ran across a great article on Men’s Health Magazine website. The featured blog, The Girl Next Door is straight female talk targeted to male readers. Young male readers for the most part. The article in question, What Female Orgasms Feel Like (which has disappeared since this was written), is a straightforward short explanation. Naomi, the blogger, asked women to describe an orgasm. She’s shared statements from these women that offer a glimpse into the feelings and sensations that accompany a woman’s orgasms. It’s not a physiological explanation but more of a personal take on the topic.
Its like an explosion starting from the inside out. I get a tingly feeling throughout my body. Sometimes I see colors (weird, I know). -Jessica S.
Take the best feeling in the world and times it by 100. -Meslissa Ann B.
You feel immediately complete satisfaction, contentment, flood of wetness, and you can feel your insides pulsate. I love it! -Merci W.
Lightening bolts starting at my feet and ending in my middle. -Ellen G.
The first bite of chocolate ice cream and the last ten minutes of a massage. #bliss -Chisty D.
It feels like if I don’t scream my head will explode. Every nerve in my body tingles. And afterward, I need to be held really tight to keep from trembling. And yet I still want more…and more…and more. -Rebecca G.
Like a roller coaster climbing the track to the top.. gradually building.and building til you hit the cresting point and it gets faster & faster as it hurtles along the track heading for the next peak. -Deb M.
I love it. A straightforward conversation, geared to educating men and women about sexuality. It’s not pornographic or salacious, but rather an open sharing of information. What do you think?
Note: Due to the continued popularity of this article I revisited the topic in May, 2012. Sex Ed-Every Woman (and Man) Wants to Understand the Female Orgasm.
